Anxiety is a mental disability that is affecting more and more of us every day. Much like depression, anxiety comes in many forms and varies in strength.
Many of us will confuse the normal anxious feeling with anxiety and insist that it is not a real thing or that anyone should be able to overcome it. This is simply not true.
Anyone who has suffered an anxiety attack or panic attack knows exactly how real it is. Anxiety attacks often leave someone feeling like they are dying. Attacks can cause excessive sweating, heavy breathing, trouble breathing, heart palpitations, weeping, chest pains, limb pain, tension headaches, hives, swelling, and much more.
Once someone experiences an attack, it seems they are vulnerable to future attacks. The brain seems to stay wired to the same paths, and if not treated, can strengthen and evolve. Anxiety attacks can start with just everyday stress but could move on to a fear of being around other people.
Anxiety can be treated with medications, or some people get relief by changing their diet and taking supplements. Treatment is different from person to person—what works for one may not work for another.
Here are some things that may help:
Sunshine
Standing in the sunlight during the day can improve your mood. Common sense tells us humans are naturally outside. We live in homes and work, shop, entertain, workout, and play sports indoors. Try taking some sunshine breaks on nice days and see if you feel different.
Natural Remedies
Try bringing some lavender into your life or a cup of chamomile tea. Now studies are showing medical marijuana can help some people in the right doses and amounts.
Breathing Exercises
Go to the app store and download a breathing exercise app. Different breathing techniques can relax you and put you in a calm mental state. Try focusing on your breathing if you have an anxiety attack because it could help ground you and bring you back to a calm state.
Support Group
There are plenty of groups out there you can join and meet others who may experience what you are going through. Not a group person? Try reaching out to a friend or family member, or perhaps try talking to a professional. Just having someone listen can be helpful.
